Rolex Submariner Date
Case and Material
The Rolex Submariner Date reference 168000 features a 40 mm Oyster case made of stainless steel. A striking feature is the black, unidirectional rotatable aluminum bezel with a minute scale for the safe measurement of diving times. The screw-down crown and case back ensure the water resistance up to 300 meters typical of the Submariner. Characteristic of the reference 168000 is the transition to the new 904L stainless steel, which henceforth became known for its exceptional corrosion resistance.
Dial and Functions
The black dial with applied luminous indices and Mercedes hands ensures optimum legibility – even underwater and in poor lighting conditions. The date is positioned at 3 o’clock and is magnified by the typical Cyclops lens on the sapphire crystal.
Bracelet and Clasp
The classic stainless steel Oyster bracelet with Fliplock safety folding clasp and diving extension offers robustness and a secure fit – both in everyday life and when diving.
Movement
Inside beats the automatic caliber 3035, which is valued for its reliability and precision. It offers a power reserve of approx. 42 hours and is equipped with a quickset date function.
Condition and Accessories
This Rolex Submariner Date reference 168000 dates from the R-series (1987/88) and is offered with service papers from 2019.
Special Features & Historical Context
Reference 168000 is considered one of the rarest Submariner references and was only produced for about nine months. The decisive difference to its direct predecessor, the 16800, is the switch from 316L stainless steel to the higher-quality and more seawater-resistant 904L steel
Timeless design, impeccable quality in every respect, and an annual increase in value make Rolex watches daily companions and wearable investments.
As the first hermetically sealed watch in history, the Rolex, with its often-copied Oyster case, began its triumphant march across the world, and legendary models such as the Submariner, GMT-Master, Explorer, and the classic Datejust have remained visually almost unchanged since their appearance.
Only in recent years has Rolex begun to minimally adapt to current trends in watch design and, with its sports models, exceeded the 40 mm case diameter limit.
In addition to its reputation as a status symbol and sports watch for extreme situations, the Rolex watch also holds a unique place in the hearts of watch collectors as a collector’s item.
